2014 #columbiaclassic was my first show. The goal this year was to try a new category (#firstfigurecompetition), beat my results from last year, heed the advice of the judges by creating more muscle, and to get used to these heels for September #northwestroyale in Issaquah. My goal has never been to beat my competitors but to beat my last best self. Anyone who does that is a winner and will probably last in the sport longer than those who base their progress on how well they place & if they earn hardware. You just never know who will show up on stage, it may be a bunch of first time competitors with more weight to lose or gain or long time experienced competitors.. either way, pride comes from personal progress.Comparing my progress pics, speaking with all 6 judges early before the crowd arrived to the after party to pick their thoughts, and asking for tips and ideas about exercise, poses, etc. from veterans with years of experience makes me even more excited and ready to work & improve again. I took lots of notes and appreciate all of the care these judges gave to feed into and give wisdom to those of us wanting to follow in their footsteps.HUGE gratitude & thanks to @alfraoof1 for training me and wanting me to set higher goals (he's proud of me & wants me to get a pro card, but that'll happen when it does). Justin for keeping me accountable daily, his care, and advise.Katy for keeping my head on straight and viewing this sport as a healthy way to grow in character, spirit, and emotion not just physically.Katie & Sabbatha at Vibe Wax Bar & Salon in Milton for my hair & makeup.Jae for my tan and Cara for my suit. #tbt #teamvictorysculptI have learned that I am a lot stronger mentally & physically than I think. I decide "I will" and tell myself that "I can" stick through an exercise or stick to my meal plan, changes begin to happen. In the beginning of this journey I would tell myself I can't do a pull up. But once I stop saying I can't and really applied myself, possibilities opened up. Today I can do a pull up with assistance. My biggest challenge has been staying focused on my goals. There's so many outside factors that one faces. For example my family tells me "You look fine, just have a slice of cake". It is tempting, but I stop and think "No I have a goal." I use the support of the fitchicks to overcome the challenges that I am faced with. I use my accountability partner Karen to keep me on track. We often text each other or if I know I am going to a family function I will post on Facebook that I am going to a birthday and I will not eat anything that is not on my food plan. Knowing that I gave my word helps me. And everyone in the Victory family is always very supportive giving ideas and suggestions that are helpful. ~Vanessa Rodriguez
